The castle was an amazing experience! The great room was full of culture and history. The bedroom was gorgeous! The bed was huge and even had heated blankets on both sides that could be turned on separately. The roof top views were even better than on top of Arthur’s seat in Edinburgh!

Bit of a curate's egg of a stay this - excellent in parts but far more things going against it. Excellent first evening with a very friendly and attentive check-in and excellent drinks and food enjoyed in the restaurant. Yet after that things got increasingly worse...
I had chosen The Ship Inn as our stay at the next door Ravelston House the previous month included cold early morning showers. I DO try to support local businesses wherever possible and try to avoid the 3 Premier Inns in the district. But at least their beds are comfortable and their showers are always hot.
Good options for carry-out dining in the town, and also along at Portobello.

They’re in the process of updating all the rooms. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened my hotel room that it wasn’t was nothing like the pictures online. It was better. The bathroom was updated with a lovely shower and heated mirror. The room was comfortable and well appointed.

The location was perfect - right by Edinburgh Waverly and 2 minutes from the Royal Mile. The facilities were perfect - classic hotel, comfortable beds, spacious rooms with high ceilings and elegantly decorated. Despite it's central location, there was no noise from the surrounding streets, making our stay very peaceful. The dinner we had in the Grand Cafe was great. We would definitely stay at the Scotsman on our next visit to Edinburgh and would recommend it to friends.

Just very disappointing, nice looking pictures online but the reality is far removed. Probably ok for 4 lads looking for a place to crash and go into the city but the slightly more discerning amongst you will find this second floor property, complete with ghetto style entrance and stairways rather lacking.

I was born in Musselburgh and come to visit family. However we do activities while here. Musselburgh is a typical Scottish town with the road going through the centre of shops. Like many towns a lot are closed. It is pleasant with the river running through and many places to walk. It is close to the beach which is relatively clean. It is a good based to get into Edinburgh and a bus service which means you don't have to take the car. On the other side is the coast road which takes you to some lovely places. The town seems a little run down in places but the racecourse and the harbour looked good. Train links to Edinburgh and the east coast. Close to A1 motorway and Edinburgh bypass. Has a good selection of supermarkets quite close together, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and an Asda just off A1 motorway. Navigation around town fairly easy and driving through also.Evans - 6.0Scored 6.0
Needed transport into Edinburgh.
Needed transport into Edinburgh. Had to ask reception about this although had looked online before hand but obviously not familiar with the area. Nothing available about this in a folder. One of the receptionist was new and didn’t know the answer but another did. Musselburgh was ok on day we visited but just a small town. Nice walk along The Forth of Firth to Joppa and Porto where you could get a drink/cake or an ice cream.

Gorgeous historical building and grounds. You can get a bit lost around all the stairs, so be sure to ask for a ground or first floor room if you have needs and/ or like access to outside more. Room and bathroom was a little too hot and small but better than cold I guess! Just felt a tad claustrophobic in single wee room that was located through quite a lot of passage ways - good for some people but not for others. Just be sure to speak to the hotel about room needs. There was some sort of fan or something going on through the night, not sure if outside or other room. Hotel was a wonderland and staff are fantastic, kind and courteous. Due to the things I mention above I feel it was a little over priced. But I guess your paying for the up keep of such a beautiful historical building and its staff.

We booked in advance for dinner which was necessary as it is a popular place and good value with very good food. Breakfast was very good full Scottish. The ventilation was poor due to warm weather. There was a fan provided in the room but the windows couldn't be opened. The spacious bedroom and the bed was comfortable but when I took the luggage coverlet off the bed I found it had stains and definitely needed cleaning.

Very few hotels get to offer the kind of luxurious atmosphere a castle (I know it's technically an estate house) like this does. It was truly a great experience, and the staff were very friendly as well. I will say we only stayed for one night, so I feel like I didn't get to really soak in the space as well as I would have liked to, but for the time I was there, I felt like I was living in a dream.

I really enjoyed the hospitality offered by Sue and Ian. The breakfast spread in the room allowed us to start our day exploring the Scottish highlands and Edinburgh on the right note.
